All About Stevenage Consolidated Charities

Stevenage Consolidated Charities was formed in 1909 from a number of charities which were set up to benefit the poor in the parish of Stevenage.  These charities were:  Cholwell;  Clerke;  Elmer;  Gynne;  Hellard's Almshouses (including subsidiary endowments);  Smyth, George, for Poor;  Smyth, Susanna, for Poor;  Swallow;  Whittington.   The original Stevenage Consolidated Charities documents are downloadable at the bottom of this page.  However the real beginnings of what became Stevenage Consolidated Charites was in 1483 when Widow Sawell gave the land on which the almshouses and bath house currently stand to Stephen Hellard the Rector of Stevenage.

In 2008/9 the Trustees of Stevenage Consolidated Charities consulted with the Charity Commission in order to produce an updated Scheme document since the 1909/10 Scheme was very outdated some 100 years later.  On the 19th February 2009 a Revised Scheme, based on the Charity Commission and Almshouse Asssociation Model scheme document, replaced the original 1909/10 Scheme documents and became operational.  This document may also be found at the bottom of this page.

The Hellard Almshouses history provides further details and may be found by following this link or via the Almshouses button on the left  of this screen.
